The informal dimension of urban control (security, law and prison):
The research in Yaounde focuses first on the central prison in order to analyze the informal dimension of urban control (security, judicial and penitentiary policies). Within the Inverses Program, the prison is viewed not as a field to assess the carceral experiences but to understand the criminal itineraries and histories of the inmates. We put forward the hypothesis that the poorest inhabitants are the most exposed to the control of the authorities. Nevertheless, the question arises of the possibilities for the populations to escape these forms of surveillance. How can they negotiate their freedom and maintain informal and criminal activities (clientelism, corruption)? What are the limits of these negotiations, especially within the police and the judicial systems? Finally, in the study of the processes of urban control, the program aims at understanding the dynamics of urban discrimination and domination.
